Fish Legal is a unique membership association, previously known as the Anglers Conservation Association. Its members come together with the common objectives of promoting and encouraging the conservation of our rivers, lakes and coastal fisheries; using the law to protect them and the interests of its members to fish in them. United in a collaborative relationship with the Angling Trust in England, the association maintains a specialist team of lawyers who provide members with cost-free representation in environmental claims. Its core work in this area involves civil claims against polluters - mostly against the water and sewerage industry or farmers – to win compensation for Fish Legal members to restore their damaged fisheries. Public law claims, or judicial reviews, against environmental regulators or other public bodies are also an important part of Fish Legal’s work.
William Rundle (Fish Legal Head Solicitor) will discuss the aims and objectives of Fish Legal and how it operates in relation to protection of the environment in general and fish in particular. He will emphasise recent examples of successful litigation, in particular;-
- Making polluters pay: a successful pollution case and what the anglers spent the money on to help the fishery recover
- Forcing regulators to act: Fish Legal’s work in using the Environmental Liability Directive to protect the endangered arctic char at Llyn Padarn
- Water Industry transparency: the recent judgement of the Upper Tribunal in Fish Legal’s ground-breaking case which means that water utilities are now legally obliged to disclose environmental information.
