Fishtek Consulting is a leading aquatic engineering specialist working across the UK, Asia and West Africa on a diverse range of projects around river engineering, fish passage and sustainable hydropower. There is currently a vacancy available for a Senior Fisheries Scientist, based at our main office in Dartington, Devon.

Roles and responsibilities:The projects that you will be involved in are wide-ranging in scope, covering all aspects of fisheries management. This includes fisheries impact assessments, fish and eel pass feasibility studies and design, fish and eel screening assessments, statistical data analysis and invasive species assessments. As well as this, there is a significant amount of ongoing innovative research and development which staff are involved in daily, contributing to large national and international projects to improve technologies and general understanding within the fisheries sector.
As one of Fishtek’s Fisheries Scientists, you will have a wide range of day-to-day activities, working within a small team to ensure successful project delivery. All team members are encouraged to manage projects and resources (staff, equipment, costs etc.), including liaison with clients, stakeholders and government agencies. As such, staff should be confident in their expertise and knowledge with a sound understanding of relevant fisheries legislation and current developments within the aquatic sector.
Fisheries scientists are involved in all aspects of a project from inception to completion. They will prepare initial quotes and supporting tender documents, and carry the project through to the final submission of the deliverable (report, technical document etc.) for client review. Staff will frequently be required to undertake site visits and surveys, including electro-fishing and water quality monitoring.
Qualifications, skills and experience:The following experience and qualifications are essential or desirable for any applicants.
|– Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a scientific or environmental discipline (essential)
– Thorough understanding of fisheries biology & management (essential)
– Robust knowledge of environmental (fisheries) legislation (essential)
– Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a scientific or environmental discipline (desirable)
– 5 years + of experience working within the environmental sector, with an emphasis on freshwater fisheries, geomorphology or bio-monitoring (essential)
– Project management experience, including managing budgets, staff and equipment (desirable)
– Understanding of fish pass design and hydropower developments (highly desirable)
– Essential skills include:
o Data analysis and statistics using a range of software e.g. excel, R, SPSS
o Presentation of complex data in comprehensive written reports and production of these reports
o A range of fish survey techniques including electro-fishing, seine netting, etc.
o Excellent inter-personal skills
o UK driving licence
– Desirable skills include:
o Experience using GIS software e.g. ArcGIS or QGIS for ecological spatial analysis
o First aid qualification / boat handling e.g. RYA Powerboat II
