The Fisheries Department of the Falkland Islands Government invites applications for
the post of Fisheries Observer Coordinator. The contract is initially for two years with
possibility of extension by mutual agreement. The successful applicant will
coordinate the team of seven Scientific Observers (Fisheries and Seabird),
organizing their deployment on commercial fishing and research vessels in liaison
with Fishery Operations and fishing companies. The post holder will check and
manage the biological and catch data collected by the observers that are used to
regulate commercial stocks of fish and squid in the Falkland Islands waters. The
successful applicant will also contribute to the Department’s research programme.
Candidates should be qualified to at least a BSc degree (or equivalent) in Marine
Biology or Ecology and have previous experience leading a team of scientific
personnel. Experience as a fishery observer or sea-going technician strongly
preferred. Significant skills with computer database operations are highly desirable.
