Wellington – New Zealand

The Population Modelling Group at NIWA (https://www.niwa.co.nz/) seeks an entry level Fisheries Modeller to apply statistical and mathematical techniques to problems related to the distribution, abundance and dynamics of fish populations and species such as seabirds and marine mammals taken as fishery by-catch. Ideally you will have some post-doctoral experience in applying statistical models for fisheries assessment purposes, but new graduates are also encouraged to apply. The position offers an opportunity to join a large broad-based science institution where cross-disciplinary interchange is expected and encouraged.

This position will join a team of about 30 fisheries population biology and stock assessment staff. The position supports both consultancy and research projects, focusing on fisheries stock assessment and the effects of fishing on the environment. The work will primarily be on projects contracted to NIWA by the Ministry for Primary Industries, the Department of Conservation, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and potentially other clients (e.g., the fishing industry).

The 280 strong NIWA Wellington campus situated on the shores of beautiful Evans Bay provides a unique multi-disciplinary work atmosphere with expertise across every aspect of the marine environment readily available for advice or collaboration. NIWA has a convenient location and a flexible family-friendly ethos, and is adjacent to several pre-school child education facilities. Wellington, the capital city, has a vibrant arts and cultural life and provides easy access to the nation’s decision makers.
