Time: 19:00

Location:  The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, King Street, Bristol

The Southwest Branch of the IFM are hosting this FREE to attend event for anyone with an interest in the growing uses of eDNA in aquatic ecosystems.

The guest speaker is Buffy Smith from the eDNA Consultancy who has over 10 years experience of working in the most challenging environments on the collection and analysis of eDNA. She is also a a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA) and has spent recent years lecturing to university students.

Buffys talk will cover:

  • The increasing use of eDNA in citizen science projects, including its accessibility and cost-effectiveness
  • How eDNA can complement traditional survey methods, with discussion of the benefits of using approaches alongside one another (for example, reducing identification errors, repeatability of results, and improved detection of elusive species)
  • Current applications of eDNA and an overview of its benefits and limitations in comparison to methods such as electrofishing, including issues around species identification and citizen science use
  • Advances in eDNA monitoring, such as eRNA, and how these may improve understanding of abundance, population health, and stress in fish populations.

Buffy will also draw from local case studies working with Rivers Trusts and water companies

The event is free to attend but you must register in advance.
