Our next course will be held on the 28-29 September

The course is a good mix of the theory needed to safely use the various methods, coupled with practical demonstrations, health and safety and field skills. We also cover some more advanced techniques for those with some prior experience.

The course utilises both backpack and control box and generator set ups from the main manufacturers

The course is delivered by Paul Coulson ( IFM Director of Operations) and Mike Lee (IFM Course Tutor and Careers Officer) who both have many years experience in the use of electric fishing equipment and training delivery.

Course Programme

Day 1

  • Introduction to monitoring
  • Introduction to electric fishing and other sampling methods
  • Electric Fishing Health & Safety, legislation and the basic theory
  • An Introduction to the electric fishing equipment
  • Hazards and working procedures
  • Backpack electric fishing equipment and processes

Please note: We recommend revising day 1 for the exam in advance

Day 2

  • Essential equipment, including personal protective equipment
  • How to conduct yourself in the field and some advance techniques – Hints, tips and other questions. 
  • Prepare for field work (techniques & methodologies)
  • Assessment
  • Field survey, gear assembly and fish sampling and processing
