The 49th Annual Conference of the Institute of Fisheries Management

This year’s Annual Conference will be hosted by the Yorkshire and North East Branch and will held in the grand surroundings of the Hull Guildhall on October 16th - 18th.

The theme for this year’s conference is Thriving or Surviving - Creating Resilient Fisheries.

The branch has put together a fantastic programme of talks that incorporates sessions from the freshwater, transitional and marine environments. Conference sessions will cover a wide range of topics over the three days including

  • Resilient Fisheries
  • Yorkshires Rivers
  • Resilient Environments
  • Mitigation and Recovery
  • Future Proofing Fisheries
  • Resilient Angling
  • Habitat Management for Fish

The conference programme can be downloaded here

The Tuesday evening will see the branch holding the Yorkshire Social at the Humber Street Distillery on the marina. During the evening we will also have posters on display. Please note this event is now full

The Wednesday evening will be the Annual Dinner which will be at The Deep Aquarium on the banks of the Humber Estuary. There are not many places where you can eat dinner whilst being watched by sharks, rays, moray eels and turtles. This is an evening not to be missed.

Please note the conference dinner must be booked separately

We also have a number of field trip options this year.

Trip 1. Skerne Wetlands Nature Reserve and West Beck

This wetland complex covers over 110 acres, comprising wet grassland, over a mile of SSSI chalk stream, and more than 90 former commercial fish farm ponds, now re-worked into a mosaic of wet woodland, reedbed, fen and open water.

The West Beck is a haven for charismatic species such as wild brown trout, grayling, brook lamprey, water vole and kingfisher. In spring, beds of water crowfoot flower, providing a carpet of white among the gravel beds where the fish spawn. The clean, oxygen-rich water is home to a wide range of mayflies, caddisflies and other aquatic insects, attracting yellow wagtails and other insect-feeding birds.

Skerne Wetlands is undergoing a major restoration programme to create a wetland paradise and a visit will always provide something new and exciting. Bitterns have been attracted to the marginal reedbeds in winter and otters are found along the chalk stream and their tracks and signs are plentiful. In late summer, muddy edges attract wading birds such as green sandpipers, whilst dragonflies may be seen scattered amongst striking stands of purple loosestrife.

Trip 2. Alkborough Flats Flood Aleviation Scheme.

In a superb natural setting, where the rivers Trent and Ouse join to form the Humber, Alkborough Flats is an exciting project. The scheme has been designed to: reduce the impact of sea level rise; safeguard the internationally important nature conservation interest of the Humber by creating new wetland habitat; provide a focus for education and access opportunities for local communities.

The site is perfect for lovers of wildlife. By breaching the river defences new habitats have been created which are a haven for wading birds and wildfowl, making the site an ideal area for bird watching and leisurely walks.

Thousands of wintering waterbirds can be seen at Alkborough Flats and include significant numbers of golden plover, lapwing, ruff, black-tailed godwit, curlew, redshank, avocet, shelduck, teal, wigeon.

The site also provides an important habitat for fish including the endangered eel and flounder, for which the site acts as a valuable nursery area. This is a valuable function of the site considering the historic habitat loss elsewhere in the estuary.

Trip 3. Hull History Walking Tour

For those who would like to stay closer to home for the afternoon we have the opportunity to take in the historical sites of Hull on foot. The tour takes in Hull’s historic quarter with its stunning architecture, wide expanses of water and long and important history including the English civil war, whaling and the cod wars, the blitz, Larkin and more.

So that we can ensure that we have enough coach space for delegates please pick your preferred option on the registration page. You can always update this closer to the time

Please note the conference fee does not include accommodation. We have worked with the team from Visit Hull and East Yorkshire and they have created a bespoke accommodation booking page for us. This can be found here

This will take some of the work out of looking for a hotel in the city. The city does of course have other hotels available, including all of the large chains
